Two Paddocks
Au Naturel Pinot Noir 2024
2024
Aromatically, there are notes of dry porcini, blueberries, and ripe plum with a hint of wet schist on the palate. The bright acidity creates tension that complements the red fruits, while dry thyme lingers on the finish. This is an unadulterated showcase of Bannockburn, Central Otago.
About the Wine
Our ‘no-add’ pinot noir was going to be called ‘Lazy’ as it is made by doing as little as possible – in fact the winemaker, Dean Shaw, jests that he will have time to help with picking this harvest as he has had so little input. Of course the exact opposite is true, as like any pursuit that pushes boundaries, this wine is a challenge for both the viticultural and winemaking teams as they attempt to create an example of a more ‘natural wine’. Pristine, organically grown Fusilier Vineyard Bannockburn fruit, then zero sulphur or pH corrections, or fining at the winery…it’s not an easy road to follow for the winemaker as attention to detail and experience are tested to uncomfortable limits. However, we think everyone can possibly feel just that little bit less preserved after a glass or two… Namaste.
Critic Review
"From the Bannockburn vineyard a very bright purple core with pink rim leads to a bouquet of wild red flowers and fruits, forest berries and damson plums, boysenberry and manuka. Very youthful and vibrant scents. On the palate a very bright fleshy core of dark red skinned fruits all reflecting the bouquet framed by a youthful energy from tannins and acidity, a taut mouthfeel and salivating finish. Well made, youthful and needing some settling time with best drinking from late 2026 through 2029" 93 Points, Cameron Dougals
